Google is continuously working on making Android more secure. The Theft Protection feature released for all Android phones protects your data. We recommend turning on theft protection on your Android phone, and this guide will help you with the procedure.

How does Theft Protection work on Android

As the name suggests, it detects when your phone is stolen and locks it. Google recently released the feature, including Remote Lock and others through the latest Google Play services update. Hence, it is not an Android 15 feature, though some people started seeing it after upgrading to the latest Android OS.

Theft Protection will detect when your phone is snatched and lock the device. This ensures that the thief can not access your apps or contacts. While it’s not a perfect solution, it allows you time to access the Find My Device app using another device to deactivate or erase the stolen phone. You can use the Remote Lock via android.com/lock, but you need to provide a phone number you pre-confirmed and pass a security challenge.

Turning on Theft Protection on your Android phone is straightforward. It works on most Android phones as long as you are running the latest Play services.

  • Head to the Settings app on your Android phone.
  • Scroll or use the search bar to locate Google
  • Tap All services
  • Look for Theft protection
  • Choose between Theft Detection Lock and Offline Device Lock and which one you want to enable.
  • To set up the Remote Lock, enable the toggle.

That’s all you need to do. We recommend turning on this feature, as it would help keep your data safe in case of theft. We have turned on our Pixel 7 Pro, and it has been working fine. However, if you experience any issues after enabling it, you can disable it.
