Magic Eraser first appeared on the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro in 2021, followed by the 6a and eventually the Pixel 7 series. It eliminates distractions that are detected automatically by Google Photos or that you explicitly pick by circling. People and objects may be removed, and a Camouflage mode allows you to change the color of chosen elements to “help them fit in organically with the rest of the shot.”
When the feature finds objects to delete when viewing an image in Google Photos, a suggestion chip will show at the bottom. Magic Eraser may be found under the editor’s “Suggestions” or “Tools” tabs. Removals can be undone at any moment.
As of today, we’re seeing the functionality on a Pixel 2 XL (Android 11) and 4a with Google Photos version 6.25. Google said last week that it will be accessible without a Google One membership for the first Pixel from 2016 through the Pixel 5a. It’s a nice gesture for Pixel 4 and earlier smartphones that no longer receive monthly security upgrades.
Not just Google Pixel Phones will get the Magic Eraser
The feature is now available for Samsung smartphones, iPhones (version 6.26), and iPads with Photos 6.25 and a Google One subscription (even the lowest $1.99 plan). The Magic Eraser tile is badged with a Google One logo in the top-left corner while editing. It operates in the same manner as on Pixel phones.
The HDR effect for videos to improve brightness and contrast is also becoming more widely available. The release date corresponds to the enlarged Magic Eraser, and Google claims that this will result in “dramatic, balanced videos that are ready to share.”
Extending the availability of Magic Eraser is a fantastic move that increases the appeal of Google One as a subscription service. Before, the technologies Google One enabled in Photos, like HDR, Portrait light, Blur, Sky effects, and Color focus, weren’t very enticing to individuals who didn’t already have a storage subscription. The addition of Magic Eraser for $1.99 a month may be enough to entice more people to try Google One.
